"Help Smokers Quit"

Peter Kavanagh, MLC for Western Victoria

Unfortunately, millions of Australians remain addicted to nicotine. We should help rather than ostracise them.

Tobacco taxes raise billions of dollars each year, a significant part of which should be spent scientifically researching and subsidising the most effective quitting strategies.

Those who cannot stop should be allowed to smoke in places where they do not harm others, including most open spaces like streets.

Is it reasonable for Frankston City Council to ban the burning of few grams of tobacco in streets where it is legal for cars to burn kilograms of petrol?
