Last Thursday evening, the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) held a protest in Ballarat opposite to where the federal cabinet was meeting.
The crowd was addressed by a large number of speakers including Tony Zegenhagen, DLP Federal Secretary, who had come from Queensland to attend. Representatives of 'Taxed Out' (the anti-Growth Area Infrastructure Charge group), those concerned about geothermal power in Gherang, anti-fluoride groups and representatives of groups concerned with the effects of wind farms on health.
Peter Kavanagh, DLP MLC for Western Victoria said that the rally continued the great tradition established in Ballarat over 150 years ago, of calling for genuine democracy (local people deciding local issues)and demanding that governments look after the ordinary person. Mr Kavanagh said that many government policies actually act against the interests of ordinary Australians. Examples include; the promotion of pokies, the sale of Australian homes to people who do not live in Australia, a lack of support for Australian industries, forcing wind farms on neighbours who are adversely affected and fluoridating water supplies without the consent of the people who will drink the water.
